Agricultural Waste Regulations

The Agricultural Waste Regulations came into force on 15th May 2006 and seeks to bring agricultural waste regulations in line with all other UK industrial controls. It is important to note that manure is not classed as waste in this instance if it is being used as fertiliser.

Unfortunately the majority of agricultural waste has in the past been disposed of on site by burning or burial which poses a serious threat to the environment. Now farmers will need to either store up their waste for a maximum of twelve months prior to disposal at a licenced site, or apply to the Environment Agency for a land permit, exemption licence or waste management licence.

Animal By-Products

Due to food scares in recent years notably BSE and Foot and Mouth, tighter legislation has been created to safeguard public health when disposing of animal by-products. The legislation states that raw meat or fish cannot go to landfill and must now be treated at an approved rendering plant, incinerator or composting facility.
